By: Armourcard Team

Tracey Grimshaw & the team at A Current Affair including reporter Alison Piotrowki and technology expert Trevor Long recently ran a report (on-air date 4 December 2014) about the growing concern over criminals being able to wireless skim your data.

Overall it was a good report & we think that its great that the mainstream media is bringing this crime to light for the benefit of the consumers know it is happening now today.

We are a little concerned they did not offer a solution, which if they had researched further could have featured Armourcard.

Armourcard is not only an Australian invention but the only protect to offer 2nd generation protection that electronically protects peoples credit cards & ePassports data from being wirelessly skimmed.

We have again been in contact with the A Current Affair team to do a follow-up story with the solution but have yet NOT heard a thing, same as last time they ran a story and we followed up with them.

Come on Tracey & the ACA team don’t you think that an Australian invention that is leading the world in protecting customers data from this crime is worth a mention and your support.

We will keep trying to get media support in our own country for an Australian start-up & world leading invention. It seems the US media gives Armourcard more play than their Australian counterparts.

Mythbusters Banned from airing RFID story

The hit Discovery channel show Mythbusters recently wanted to air an episode about how trackable and hackable RFID chips were.  It’s still not clear as to why they were not allowed to proceed in airing the show but as Adam Savage the co-host of the hit show eludes to in this interview, some very powerful people / companies made sure that it would never air.

Everyone would’ve learned more about the technology that?s invisibly invading our lives and the vulnerabilities surrounding this global uptake and usage of these technologies on us by the big end of town.

Talk about shutting down and closing ranks…… it seems the card issuing companies and RFID manufacturers really don’t want us (we the people) to know how vulnerable this technology is and how easy it is to hack / skim.

Thanks Mythbusters for trying to expose this vulnerable technology and although your piece did not go live on the Mythbusters show the surrounding hype about the show being pulled shows just how vulnerable we are to skimming.

The only way to protect your personal data is with the latest technology found in an ARMOURCARD. The first Active RFID & NFC protective device.

Identity Theft on the rise in Australia.

A recent report that has been released in Australia shows that we are NOT immune to the global increase in identity theft, in-fact Australians are pretty soft targets.

It will never happen to me

The reasons for this rang from the attitude “it will never happen to me” to just being lackluster about basic security of your personal details, from securing your mail box to shredding your bank statements to even being on the look out for skimmers that skim your data, Australian’s are too laid back with their personal data & are easy targets for Identity theft or credit theft.

Veda, credit information company analysed $1.6 trillion worth of credit applications in the year to June 30 and found that $1.9 billion worth of those applications posed fraud risks.

1.9 Billion worth fraud risks

Veda’s general manager of fraud and identity solutions Imelda Newton said

“Identity theft was the fastest growing form of credit application fraud, as fraudsters continuously change their tactics.

What we’ve found is that the fraudsters have adopted using stolen identities as opposed to using fictitious identities,” Ms Newton said.

“In fact, over the past year, we’ve seen the use of those stolen identities increase 103 per cent.”

The information can be collected by fraudsters breaking into people’s homes, taking mail from their letterboxes or stealing wallets and handbags or even being wirelessly skimmed.

103% increase in the past year.

The fraudster then assumes the victim’s identity and applies for credit in their name. You can guarantee the financial institutions will not cover the fraud on that type of crime against your name.

Start to take back control of your identity data. It starts with an Armourcard.

Contact-less technology adoption in Australia is exceeding expectations

Australia has long been a testing ground for new technologies and products just like contact-less technology found in credit cards & ePassports, the isolation of the continent in relation to North America & Europe probably contributes to the notion of a testing ground that can give real insights into the future global roll-out of products (plus they can contain any issues before they become global issues). An example of this (let me digress for a moment to prove the point), is the automotive industry here in Australia, we have more marks or manufactures in this country than in the USA or Europe.

ABARTH, ALFA ROMEO, ASTON MARTIN, AUSTIN, ACURA
BEDFORD, BENTLEY, BOLWELL, BUFORI,
CADILLAC, CATERHAM, CHERY, CHEVROLET, CHRYSLER, CITROEN
DAEWOO, DAIHATSU, DODGE
FIAT, FORD
GEELY,GREAT WALL
HINO,HUMMER, HOLDEN (GM) HYUNDAI, HONDA
INFINITI, ISUZU
JAGUAR, JEEP
KIA
LAND ROVER, LEXUS, LOTUS
MINI, MITSUBISHI
OPEL
PORSCHE, PROTON
RANGE ROVER, RENAULT
SAAB, SKODA, SSANGYONG, SUBARU, SUZUKI
TATA
VOLVO, VW

Just to name a few manufactures & given some of the marks have come and gone with this disparity of variety to population base (as of writing this post an estimated 23,547,811 people in Australia according to the Bureau of statistics) also proves that many global companies see Australia as a great & containable testing ground.

Part of the reason for this is many Australians often fall into the category of ”early adopter” meaning they don’t mind giving it a go. This is especially is relevant in early technology up-takes.

This is why Australia has been one of the first countries to fully embrace the contact-less payment systems that started fully rolling out in Australia in 2009 and partially before this date. Well before many countries.

Even in these early adverts it show how easy it is to quickly use this facility to check-out, however it seems they may have reduced the read distance for the readers as now you have to actually hold the card a little longer than the footage shows. Perhaps because people were a little freaked out when their card was read from a greater distance unintendedly.

In recent research undertaken by RFintelligence who are a global provider of business intelligence focusing exclusively on financial services, shows that Australians are leading the way with adopting this technology into their lives, which would be a great result for the card issuing companies & financial institutions.

spychipsRFi’s latest payments research shows the take-up of contactless payments is gathering pace. By March 2014 two-thirds of Australian adults had a contactless card, up from 26 per cent in September 2011. And according to RFi, the activation rate, or the proportion of contactless card owners who have used their card to make a contactless payment, has increased, from 45 per cent to 72 per cent in the same period.

One of the points I’d like to bring up is when you get issued a new card here in Australia you do not get the option to ‘op-out’ of a RFID enabled cards like visa’s PayWave & mastercards PayPass^ you just get sent them so I guess I can understand the increase in the stat’s & lets be honest the ‘tap & go’ facility is kind of convenient to use so I can also attest to the uptake of the use of the ‘contact-less’ check-out terminals as well. Hell we use them.

chipsWhat many of these people who have these cards in their wallet or purse do not know is that very same technology that is used in these cards & RFID check-out readers can also be used to wirelessly skim your cards & personal data. It is the nature of this technology, RFID transmits your data over open airwaves.
The early origins of this RFID technology lay in the cold war and was originally used as a spy tool. Now, this technology is used everywhere from inventory tracking (yes a tracking tool) to embedded in your pets or into your clothes. If you’re interested in how governments, companies & institutions want to you use this technology on you, then you should read this book called SPYCHIPS by Dr Katherine Albrecht who is the a global expert and champion of protecting your?privacy and exposing the truth & motives behind companies & governments wanting to implement this RFID technology. A truly interesting read.

Now we are not saying the convenience of this technology is not great nor are we saying that the financial institutions & governments who have implemented this technology are not trying to better secure it, what we are saying is we personally were not satisfied with the level of protection offered by the passive protective devices on the market that claim to supposedly protect your data from being wirelessly skimmed.

That is why we developed the world 1st Active RFID & NFC protective device called Armourcard, we do not try and block or shield RFID signals (passive) this method has varying degrees of success & often at most may simply reduce the distance you could be skimmed, but might not stop it.*

Armourcard ‘Actively’ powers up with its own battery (not relying on convection from the RFID reader) and emits a jamming forcefield that actually jams the most common frequency these contact-less devices communicate over of 13.56 MHz.

Find out why Armourcard is better here

We know there are a lot of different RFID protective devices on the market like RFID blocking wallets or shielding credit card sleeves that are passive, we developed Armourcard to personally protect our own data as we were concerned with the global roll-out of this technology and the limitations of passive protection offered in the marketplace.

If you want to protect your personal information from wireless skimming then Armourcard with its Active jamming technology is the superior choice.

Armourcard as seen in major news networks in the USA on electronic pickpockets

Electronic Pickpockets featured story on ABC news, NBC News, Fox News, CBS News with Armourcard CEO Tyler Harris explaining how to protect yourselfFounder & CEO of Armourcard, Tyler Harris has been interviewed for a story on electronic pickpockets my the major news networks in USA.

The interview titled Beware Of Electronic Pickpocketing Warns Security Expert Tyler Harris

The article touches on the RFID technology used in many things from inventory tracking to credit cards, passports, ID cards & enhanced drivers licenses all vulnerable to being skimmed.

As Harris says:

“We were concerned about our own privacy and cards being vulnerable. That’s what made us investigate further as we could see people could skim or hack you and we discovered how easy it is to do.”

In the piece touched on some of the history of this technology,

RFID technology has been around since the cold war, originally a spy tool of the KGB. It lies dormant until powered by radio waves. The KGB originally planted these chips in embassies in West Berlin, which explains why when the embassy was searched for bugs, none were ever found. The device would lay dormant until a KGB operative, sitting outside in a van, pointed a reader at the wall in which the bug was hidden, usually when important meetings occurred.

Harris went on to say:

“It gets worse. With the latest smartphones being Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled they allow you to transmit data over open airwaves via your phone. Team that with free software and it turns your phone into a credit card or ePassport skimmer. Now not only hardened criminals can start skimming, but any opportunist with a smartphone.”

The article also cited A Wired Magazine article that showed how easy it is to be skimmed shown on stage at a recent DefCon hacker conference which is held every summer in Las Vegas.

Harris smiled knowingly when told about the Defcon situation.

That’s why we developed Armourcard. It is a similar shape to a credit card and fits in your wallet. It doesn’t try to block or shield the RFID reader trying to send a signal or communicate with your cards like other available devices. As soon as an RFID reader tries to interrogate your card or ePassport, Armourcard instantly powers up. It uses its own power source so it doesn’t rely on convection to power and it puts out a jamming force-field a jamming signal that blocks the frequency these readers communicate over which is 13.56 MHZ.

‘TAP & GO’ Broke – A Current Affair Report just needs a follow-up story highlighting the wireless skimming vulnerabilities surrounding these cards.

The renowned Australian news & current affairs program ‘A Current Affair’ has aired a report on some of the risks surrounding ‘Tap & Go’ credit cards & the technology that makes them work.

We applaud Tracy and the ACA team for helping educate the public on the vulnerabilities surrounding these RFID enabled cards.

Screen-Shot-2014-07-03-at-9.46.10-am-300x190However we believe that they may have missed a bigger opportunity to further explain how that a criminal does not even have to physically steal your credit card to use the ‘tap & go’ facility as these cards can easily be wirelessly skimmed by anyone with NFC enabled phone or someone who buys a RFID reader of ebay and search online for how to skim credit cards with it and download the free software to do it.

We have followed up with the ACA team this morning in the hope that we can help with a follow-up story on the wireless skimming that can happen easily with these RFID enabled cards.

We are open to be interviewed please contact via our contact us page

How NOT to get skimmed in your next taxi ride!

Taxi rides and being skimmed is seeming to go hand in hand lately, with a huge amount of major media coverage, we have covered this crime in the past taxi skimming article see here.

  1. Photo of Cabbies Accreditation – A great idea is the take a photo with your phone camera of the drivers accreditation card, it should be visible on the front dash. This has the added benefit of subtly letting the cabby know that you are aware skimming goes on. If the cabby complains then alarm bells should start to sound, you have every right to take down this license detail.
  2. Sound Message – I also like to do a quick sound memo of time, where I collected the cab from and where I’m heading with the taxis number.
  3. Keep card in sight – Always keep your card in plain sight, never let the cabbie take your card out of your sight. Ask the cabbie to process the payment in-front of you in the centre console area.
  4. Also be wary of ‘Tap & Go’ payments – A lot of people are saying just use the ‘tap & go’ payment facility to pay, this also has its perils as just by the nature of this ‘contact-less’ technology your cards can be skimmed wirelessly if they are in the vicinity of a reader (any reader or NFC enabled phone). How easy would it be to have a second reader sitting in the centre console and it also picks up all your cards data wirelessly. The best way to protect yourself from this wireless skimming is an Armourcard. Read more about what is Armourcard here. When you do use the ‘wave & go’ terminal ensure you take it to the back seat with you.
  5. Watch out for mobile phones – Now with NFC (near field communication) enabled smartphones & a quick search in the App stores ANYONE can download FREE credit card skimming apps, so if you have a tap & go enabled credit card like MasterCard,  PayPass* VisaCard,  PayWave* Amex, XpressPay* these cards transmit your data over open airwaves (find out more here why RFID & NFC is a vulnerable technology) so look out to see that the cabbie isn’t putting his smartphone near your credit / debit cards as that could mean he is skimming the data of them into the phones skimming app.

Now we must say not all cab driver are sly and the majority are most probably fine, however if you arm yourself with even a few of these tips the next time your jump into a cab, then you can better protect your credit card data from being skimmed.

If you are wanting to find out about the best way to protect your ‘Tap & Go’ credit cards & ePassports from being skimmed look at Armourcard.

When does a simple pleasure like a hug turn into a world of identity theft pain.

There is a new wave of identity theft wireless skimming hitting the streets, the perpetrators don’t even need to boost a RFID readers signal strength. They simply ask for a hug.! That’s right a nice heart warming hug can now get your credit card data skimmed.
It’s been reported by WXIA-TV in the USA that this crime is happening and preying on the good will of people.
In other reports this simple yet effective means to wirelessly skim your data can easily be cloaked by other alternative means like posing as a street charity worker collecting funds or someone who needs assistance on the side of the road changing a tyre.
What a thought that now even the humble feel good hug can be used to wirelessly skim your identity data.
Why not put an Armourcard in your wallet so hugging can still be a warm, fuzzy & safe thing to still do. Don’t let the criminals deny us this simple pleasure as well.

BUY NOW & Keep hugging

Some interesting demographic identity theft statistics:

[divider style=”single” border=”small” color=”#e2e2e2″]

Identity theft occurs when a criminal obtains and uses someone else’s personal information credit card numbers, bank account numbers, insurance information or Social Security number to purchase goods or services fraudulently. Identity theft is a state and federal crime. These Identity Theft Statistics are telling an interesting story on where we are  today.

According to Javelin Strategy & Research’s 2014 Identity Fraud Study, there was one new identity fraud victim every two seconds in the US in 2013 and the number of victims climbed to 13.1 million.

Some interesting demographic stat’s: People with social media profiles like Facebook, Twitter etc are also easy targets due to the personal information they put on their profiles; (remember in this age you have to work hard to keep things private, unlike in the past when you had to work hard to make things public)
Seven percent of smartphone owners are impacted since 62 percent of them do not use a password on their home screen and 32 percent save log-in information on their devices; (and now with NFC enabled smartphones, anyone can download FREE Apps to turn the phone into a credit card skimmer)
Nearly 3 million of the 12 million people affected by identity theft each year are deceased people; (I see dead people)
College students with clean credit scores are ideal targets;
Victims of data breaches are 9.5 times more likely to be a victim of identity theft;
Households with incomes of $150,000 or more (7.7 percent) are more likely to be victimized;

and the big one….

Thieves can steal credit and debit card information through a technology called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which uses radio waves. The digital pickpocket brushes a device called a skimmer close to someone’s purse or wallet and steals the information from the cards inside. The information is overlaid onto any card with a magnetic strip and used to make purchases. People can protect themselves by purchasing Armourcard the 1st Active RFID & NFC jamming device.

Isn’t it time you get protection from electronic skimming…?
